Example : Before 5 years, the age of father was thrice the age of his son. After 10 years, the age of father will be twice the age of his son. Find the present ages of father and son.
Say that the present age of father is x years and the age of son is y years.
The age of father before 5 years = (x-5) years
The age of son before 5 years = ( y-5) years
The age of father after 10 years = (x+10) years
The age of son after 10 years = (y+10) years
According the first condition,
x-5 =3(y-5)
x-5=3y-15
x-3y=-10 .................(1)
According the second condition,
x+10=2(y+10)
x+10=2y+20
x-2y=10 .................(2)
Solving question (1) and (2),
x=50 ,y=20
Therefore,
Father's present age = 50 years and
Son's present age = 20 years
